Week4: Multimedia & Creativity

With the progress of Technology, future teachers will use more and more multimedia in their classrooms.

What principles will we use?

The progress in digital technologies and the study of how children construct meaning have stimulated novel approaches in both research on multimedia and literacy education. (Djonov, & Lim, 2021)

In Mayer's (2020) work, ten coherence principles are discussed. I pose here with several being particularly noteworthy. These include:

1. the removal of extraneous material,

2. the spatial contiguity principle, which involves placing printed text next to the corresponding part of the graphic,

3. the redundancy principle of presenting graphics and narration rather than graphics, narration, and on-screen text,

4. the segmenting principle of breaking continuous presentations into learner-paced segments,

5. the pretraining principle of describing the names and characteristics of key components before presenting a multimedia lesson,

6. the modality principle of presenting words in spoken rather than printed form, and

7. the personalization principle of using a conversational language style.

Kress (2010) believed that the ability of an individual to manipulate and integrate various semiotic resources through a single digital interface demands a fresh perspective on the theory of multimedia. Therefore, it is important that we have more useful resources and clear plans.

Frey & Sutton (2010) provided s sort of design process that teachers or students might use for multimedia projects in the future:

• Step 1: Define the instructional goals, objectives, and audience

• Step 2: Review and investigate existing options

• Step 3: Determine format, budget, and timeline

• Step 4: Determine the content, activities, and assessment strategies.

• Step 5: Develop evaluation strategies, criteria, and instruments to determine the effectiveness of the project.

• Step 6: Develop the flowchart, site map, and storyboard.

• Step 7: Develop a prototype.

• Step 8: Perform a formative evaluation.

• Step 9: Complete the design.

• Step 10: Perform a summative evaluation of the product and process

I have tried some resources:

1. Google site is a useful resource for building up an online multimedia site. Here is part of my work.

Stop Motion is another useful App for making short films. For example, I made a short film to explain the spring energy transition.

Additionally, there is a concise book, or we can call it a toolkit, that presents numerous illustrations on how to create impactful multimedia material. It encompasses best practices and rules for producing visuals, videos, and comprehensive multimodal websites.

I like how you discussed multiple different options for technology in this post! It's clear that you've researched very deeply into how multimedia should be used in the classroom, but I would've loved more insight into how the technology you tried could be used, and in turn foster creativity in students. Similarly, it would've been good to get to know some limitations of the technologies you discussed as well.

The summary of the various principles were beneficial, and showed how best to use multimedia in the classroom.

Hi Xin,

It was great how you discussed the key principles of the design process proposed by Mayer (2020) - this provided a clear summary of the driving motivations behind the research on multimedia and literacy education. However, it would have been insightful if you could explore whether these principles were a result of the findings of the research or were theories explored in the research. The specific steps in the design process you noted were also insightful as to how these principles can be applied in education, however it would be great if you had explored a single example more deeply in order to understand how these principles and steps may be used practically.
